President Trump's decision to attack Venezuela and capture President Nicolas Maduro was one of the most radical of his administration, according to President Trump. Elizabeth SaundersProfessor of Political Science at Columbia University, specializing in American foreign policy. While the U.S. has toppled leaders abroad before, especially in Latin America, Saunders argues that Trump's actions in Venezuela are troubling because the president doesn't seem to take much direction from Congress, the American public or even his own advisers. Saunders says she was surprised by the decision to seize Maduro and especially since Trump said the US would now essentially run Venezuela. Saunders argues that the invasion was driven more by the individual goals and priorities of Trump's senior adviser Stephen Miller, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the president himself, rather than simply by the US desire to seize Venezuela's oil reserves.
