There was some sort of leak that left over two hours left Banguimysterious and long-gestating Marathon available for viewing. The footage gives us a good idea of the current state of the extraction shooter, showing gunplay and user interface across multiple maps.
This happens thanks to User Bilibili who uploaded clips from their time playing at Marathon's October closed technical test. In the 132-minute videos, which are still available at the time of writing, we see Dire Marsh, Perimeter and Outpost, which are a mix of existing assets, now updated, and brand new additions.
The perimeter was tested in April and now looks much better compared to the available images and information from this session. It's more colorful, easier to maneuver, and overall looks sleeker. Outpost is a completely new option that's a little more intimate than the other two, and gets the player into intense firefights faster.
The Sniper, Shotgun, and Assault Rifle are all put to good use by the player, and each of them feels as useful as you'd expect. Marathon's bright, vibrant aesthetic is pleasing to the weapon, giving it a distinct flair on screen. The UI also looks clean and minimalistic, but given that this is all a work in progress, expect some or all of these elements to change at least a little between now and the next time you see the game in action.
BanguiI conducted these sessions under a strict non-disclosure agreement, prohibiting people from discussing what they saw, which is why this gameplay is so remarkable. The studio announced Marathon in 2023, but development began long before then, and the game has now undergone several internal changes at the company, including the acquisition Sonylayoffs and restructuring.
We had a release date in September last year, but now it's already here. postponed indefinitelyalthough Sony says it will release before the end of March 2026. Whether this will hold up is another question, but there is another play test to come. scheduled for December. Marathon development is turning out to be a marathon, pun intended, and there may still be a long way to go to the finish line.
