The federal government is gathering a target group to be guided by the following steps on artificial intelligenceand minister of artificial intelligence Evan Solomon promises to update the strategy of the government.
Solomon on Wednesday told the ALL in in altifical intelligence conference in Montreal that the “updated” strategy will be presented at the end of this year, “almost two years earlier than the graphics”.
He said that Canada could not afford to wait.
“We need to quickly update and move,” he said in the main speech at the beginning of the conference.
The target group will include about 20 representatives of industry, academic circles and civil society. The government claims that it does not disclose membership before the end of this week.
Solomon said that members of the target group are asked to consult with their networks, to offer “bold, practical” ideas and inform him in November.
The group will consider various topics related to AI, including research, adoption, commercialization, investment, infrastructure, skills, as well as safety and safety. The government also plans to receive a contribution from the public.
Canada was the first country that launched the national strategy of AI, which the government updated in 2022. The strategy is devoted to commercialization, development and acceptance of standards, talents and research of AI.
Solomon also teased the “main quantum initiative”, which appeared in October to ensure living both quantum computing talents and intellectual property in the country.

“The goal here is not to be a farmer team for someone else's economy. We do not grow companies only so that someone bought it and moves, ”he said.
Solomon called the digital sovereignty “the most pressing policy and the democratic problem of our time” and emphasized that Canada has its own “digital economy, which someone else cannot decide to turn off.”
Solomon said that the recent attention of the federal government on large projects applies to artificial intelligence. He compared current conversations about the framework of AI in Canada with how earlier generations spoke of the national railway or highway.
“We must include digital infrastructure to build the economy of the future,” he said.
Solomon also discussed the need for public confidence in AI and state investment in Canadian artificial intelligence technologies.
After his speech on Wednesday morning, the minister participated in a group with Cohere, a company from Toronto, which last month signed an agreement with Ottawa on working on AI in the public service.
He said that his government would solve problems about artificial intelligence, focusing on the reform of confidentiality and modernizing the 25-year law of Canada on confidentiality.
“We are going to turn on the protection for consumers who are concerned about things such as a deep fake and protection for children, because this is a big, big problem. And we are going to establish clear standards for using data so that the innovators are clarified to unlock investments, ”said Solomon.
“Canadians are not going to hug AI if they are afraid of deep fake, if they are afraid of fraud, if anyone speaks only about loss of work and moving.”
He told reporters to the press conference after the panel that Canadians are concerned about the influence of AI on their health, financial and personal data.
Solomon said that this is a “basic principle” for the government, that confidential data should be subject to Canadian law.
