Provincial police say more than $79 million worth of pot plants have been seized as part of an investigation into a cannabis operation in Tyendinaga-Mohawk that is allegedly linked to organized crime.

Seven search warrants were executed at six locations throughout the Bay of Quinte in southeastern Ontario between Oct. 1 and Oct. 7.

Officers from OPP, the Tyendinaga-Mohawk Police Service and the Canada Border Services Agency took part in the operation, which resulted in 53 charges being filed against 24 people.

According to OPP, officers seized 46,700 illegal cannabis plants valued at more than $79 million, four pounds of dried illegal cannabis, a quantity of THC extract, 3.7 million contraband cigarettes and 35,600 kilograms of finely cut contraband tobacco totaling more than $9.6 million.
They also seized approximately $358,400 worth of commercial cigarette manufacturing equipment and other items considered property related to the crime.

119,000 plants were confiscated.

The latest seizure brings the total number of illegal cannabis plants seized over the past couple of months to approximately 119,000, valued at more than $200 million.

“The second phase of enforcement has concluded, further highlighting the extent to which non-community members have been using our land for profit,” said Tyendinaga Police Service Acting Sgt. – Chris Brinklow said.

“A total of 19 non-community individuals were charged. These operations enriched organized crime while providing no benefit to our people. The Tyendinaga Police Service remains committed to protecting our territory and ensuring that those who violate our rights and responsibilities are brought to justice.”
