OpenAI will allow mature content, including erotica, to verified adult users as of December

OpenAI will allow adult content to adult ChatGPT users who verify their age on the platform starting in December, CEO Sam Altman said Tuesday.

“As we more fully implement age restrictions and as part of our ethos of 'treating adult users like adults,' we will allow even more, such as erotica for verified adults,” Altman wrote in a post on X on Tuesday.

Altman said OpenAI made ChatGPT “pretty restrictive” to ensure it was sensitive to mental health issues, although it made the chatbot “less useful/enjoyable for many users who did not have mental health issues.”

OpenAI has been able to mitigate mental health issues and has new tools that will allow restrictions to be eased safely in most cases, Altman said.

In the coming weeks, OpenAI will release a version of ChatGPT that will allow people to better determine the tone and personality of a chatbot, Altman said.

“If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we're maximizing usage),” Altman said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Meta introduced extended restrictions for Instagram users who are under 18 years of age, which will filter out more advanced content than what you will see in PG-13 rated films.

This comes after OpenAI new parental controls introducedwhich will prevent their chatbot from engaging in flirtatious conversations or conversations about suicide or self-harm with people under 18 years of age. This statement was followed by suicide death of a teenager who had been communicating with ChatGPT for several months, as well as a lawsuit from the boy's family.

The company said it is creating an age prediction system that will estimate a user's age based on how they use ChatGPT and impose certain restrictions on users they believe are under 18 years old.
