One person was killed and another was seriously injured after two helicopters collided in midair Sunday over a New Jersey town, local police said.
The Hammonton Police Department said one of the helicopters was engulfed in flames when it crash-landed and emergency services were working to extinguish the fire.
Only the pilots were on board each plane, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement, adding that there will be a federal investigation into what led to the collision.
Hammonton is located approximately 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, near the Atlantic City Expressway.
Hammonton police said one person on board was treated for “serious life-threatening injuries.”
The accident, involving an Enstrom 280C helicopter and an Enstrom F-28A helicopter, occurred around 11:25 a.m. EST (4:25 p.m. BST), according to the National Transportation Safety Board. Both helicopters are light aircraft that typically seat three people or less.
In January A military helicopter collided with a passenger plane in Washington, D.C. 67 people died.
FAA data shows that the number of fatal helicopter accidents has declined on average over the past three years.
