When Tristan Jarry started his career in the major leagues with Pittsburgh Penguins During the 2016-17 season, he didn’t even imagine that he would move to another NHL team.
But on Friday, he and minor leaguer Sam Poulinwas sent to Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak and a second-round pick.
“Yeah, it's different,” Jarry told reporters in Pittsburgh on Monday ahead of his return to PPG Paints Arena. “I've always thought about it: Honestly, I'll never play for another team.”
Jarry played 307 NHL games for the Penguins during his tenure with the team, which spanned 10 seasons.
He became the Penguins' starter in 2021-22, where he appeared in 58 games and posted a .919 save percentage and 2.42 goals-against average, which also earned him a berth in the All-Star Game.
He re-signed with the Penguins in the 2023 offseason, signing a five-year contract worth $26.9 million.
“I loved Pittsburgh. I liked living there. I loved the city and everything that came with putting on that T-shirt. It was special to me and everything I could have imagined.”
He had 161 wins in his Pittsburgh career, including a 9-3 record in the 14 games played this season before his trade.
“You never know, hopefully in a good way,” the Surrey, British Columbia native smiled when asked how he thought he would be received upon his return. “I put my heart and soul into this team and I hope they understand that.
“You want to win every game you step on the ice, and I think all I wanted to do was win in Pittsburgh. I hope that’s how I’ll be received.”
