New York Mets have officially entered a new era.
After seven seasons both Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz left the Mets for other teams one after another. Alonso will reportedly move to the Baltimore Orioles, while Diaz will join the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers.
This reality is difficult for Mets fans to accept, especially since Steve Cohen, by far the richest owner in sports and a longtime Mets fan, took control of the team five years ago. However, the club's management decided to let the homegrown talent and another fan favorite walk.

This prompted longtime New York radio host Joe Beningo call his old stationWFAN to divest its ownership and President of Baseball Operations David Stearns.
“You know, I can’t stand David Stearns. He thinks he's the smartest guy in the room. Now we're going to find out just how damn smart David Stearns is. We'll find out how brilliantly a Harvard education serves David Stearns. Let's see.
“But the real culprit is the owner. The owner sold us a bill of lading. We all thought, we were all sucked in, “Uncle Stevie's big money, it'll never be the same as with the Wilpons,” and he spent the money. [Justin] Verlander, [Max] Scherzer, he went ahead and got [Juan] Soto. But where is this guy? He should be like Mr. Met, I should see him on the court at the Garden for playoff games wearing a Met cap. What kind of Met fan are you? Are you telling me you're a Met fan, Cohen? Forget Stearns, he's a fraud as far as a Met fan goes. He probably has Yankee gear at home.”
Beningo also compared Alonso's departure to the Tom Seaver trade and Darryl Strawberry's move to the Dodgers before making a bold statement about the team's former owners, who were known for being cheap.

Orioles SIGN STAR SLUGGER: REPORTS
“We all knew what the Wilpons were… but you know what? I truly believe that Fred Wilpon, Jeff Wilpon would have understood what exactly Alonso meant to the organization and they would have signed him. I really believe that,” Beningo said, citing the Wilpons extending David Wright’s contract to make him a Met regular. “As much as we get at Wilpons, and this guy is nowhere to be found. He sold us a bill of lading. I don't care what they do, I don't care what this little genius does the rest of the way… it doesn't make up for it and doesn't make us a better team than the Dodgers.
“Owner, I’m mad at the owner,” he added. “I can't tell you how pissed I am… He sold us a bill of lading and shoved it right up our ass.”
Earlier this offseason, the Mets also traded Brandon Nimmoanother homegrown talent to the Texas Rangers in place of Marcus Semien. They also signed Devin Williams, who had a rough season with the New York Yankees, to a three-year contract.

There's still a lot of time left in the offseason, and players like Kyle Tucker Cody BellingerBeau Bichette and Framber Valdez remain available. But for now, Cohen and Stearns are public enemy No. 1 in Queens, just a year after they were hailed as heroes for stealing Soto from the Bronx.
