The number of Canadians returning from trips to the United States fell again in August, falling to 2.9 million trips, or 29.7 per cent less than a year ago, according to the latest monthly data.

While travel by U.S. residents to Canada also fell in August, down 1.4 percent from 2024 to 3.2 million trips, more U.S. residents traveled north of the border than Canadian residents traveling south.
This is the third time since June 2006 (excluding August and September 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic) that the share of American residents traveling to Canada was higher than the share of Canadians traveling to the States. U.S. residents made up 78.1% of all non-resident travel to Canada in August.
Return trips to the United States accounted for 70.2% of all international trips taken by Canadian residents in August. Foreign travel by Canadians increased by 8.6% compared to last year.
Overall, Canadians returned from 4.2 million trips abroad in August, down 21.5 per cent from 2024.
Canadians also traveled less frequently by car from the United States, with return car trips falling 32.6 percent to 2.2 million in August.
From the US it also decreased over the month, by 17 percent compared to 2024. But the number of return flights from foreign countries increased by 9.1 percent to 1.2 million trips.
The number of non-U.S. residents arriving in Canada from abroad increased 9.2% to 886,000 arrivals compared to August 2024. Most foreign residents arrived by air.
The increase in foreign visits to Canada was driven primarily by travelers from Europe and Asia, with the UK, France and Germany accounting for a third of all international arrivals.
