Nottingham Forest fires manager Ange Postecoglou after winless start

Nottingham Forest sacked manager Ange Postecoglou about 20 minutes after their 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday and just 39 days after the Australian took charge.

Postecoglou has not won any of his eight matches since replacing Nuno Espirito Santo on September 9, with owner Evangelos Marinakis making a ruthless call after Forest's fourth straight defeat in all competitions.

“Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that following a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect,” the statement read.

“The club will not be making any further comment at this time.”

It was Postecoglou's first job since being sacked by Tottenham at the end of last season, despite leading Spurs to the Europa League title and ending their 17-year trophy drought.

Forest lost six and drew the other two of their eight games under Postecoglou. This included four defeats from five in the league and only one goal scored in the process, leaving Forest just above the bottom three.

Nuno was sacked despite leading Forest to Europe following a public row with Marinakis, which reportedly stemmed from a breakdown in relations with the club's newly hired head of football, Edu Gaspar.

Postecoglou seemed an odd choice as a replacement given that his preferred style of play – attacking and attacking – was different from Nuno and the team playing at the City Ground.

If Postecoglou's idea was to bring a more expansive approach to Forest, it was not delivered. In five championship matches led by the Australian, the team scored one goal.

Loud jeers rang out after the full-time whistle against Chelsea.

No replacement has yet been announced, but British media have already reported that Sean Dyche, the former Burnley and Everton manager, was expected to take over if Forest sack Postecoglou.

Dyche was sacked by Everton in January. He was a youth team player for Forest and then spent his career in lower league clubs.

His direct and pragmatic style of play is more similar to Nuno's than Postecoglou's.
