North Texas transfer quarterback Drew Mestemaker commits to Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State grounded his defender. Former North Texas signaling device Drew Placemaker follows Eric Morris to the Cowboys after two seasons in Denton through the NCAA transfer portal.

A former punter, he played five games as a freshman at North Texas, including a standout performance in the bowl game that season, before taking over the starting role as a redshirt freshman last fall. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound player set the college football world on fire in his second act.

He completed 70.2% of his passes, leading the FBS in passing yards with 4,129 in 12 games. On top of that, he threw 31 touchdowns with just seven interceptions and was named American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Since his head coach left for Oklahoma State, he decided to become a free agent. All of this led to the Cowboys retaining his services as he will continue his impressive relationship with Morris in Stillwater.

The Austin, Texas native is one of five freshmen in FBS history to throw for 4,000 yards and now holds several single-season passing records for the Mean Green. He hopes for similar results with Oklahoma State in 2026.

Placemaker will be part of the changing of the guard at Oklahoma State. For the first time since 2004, the 2026 season will open without Mike Gandy aside.

With Morris at the helm, the former North Texas leader believes he will have a chance to win a title with the Cowboys: Morris emphatically stated that Oklahoma State certainly could have won the national championship.

“This is absolutely the most ideal option for me and my family that we could ever think of,” Morris said at his introductory press conference. “As for the pros, can we win a championship? My answer to that question is: Hell yeah, we can win a damn championship here. The next question is: how, right? First, this place has all the advantages. Incredible management. Top-notch facilities. Passionate fan base and storied history.”

We're going to go out and rework and recruit everyone. We're going to identify the best talent across the state and the country to come to Stillwater and play for this program.”
