NordVPN has taken another step towards transparency by open-sourcing its graphical user interface (GUI) application for Linux.
This means that anyone can now look at the code and find new ways to develop and customize it.
The code is already available on GitHub. This applies to the entire codebase for NordVPNgraphical application along with assembly instructions.
The company has also updated its Snap package to include a GUI application. This change makes NordVPN more accessible and easier to use for the Linux community.
The move follows Linux's surge in popularity among NordVPN users since the GUI debuted earlier this year. It also signals a broader move towards openness by NordVPN, which is one of the reasons why best VPN in our comprehensive rating.
NordVPN is committed to transparency and accessibility
“Because Linux thrives on transparency and shared mastery, we're opening up our GUI so the community can see it, change it, and help push it forward,” says Marijus Briedis, the company's CTO. NordVPN.
Going Open Source started in 2023when the company open sourced its command line interface (CLI) application for Linux. However, it was the transition to a graphical interface that led to a sharp increase in Linux adoption: in just 100 days since its introduction, it grew by 70%.
Since Linux users have truly come to appreciate NordVPN's easier-to-use and accessible GUI, the company hopes community input will make the feature even better.
“We welcome input and will continue to work with the community to create the best VPN client for Linux,” adds Briedis.
It's important to note that while the GUI and command line interface are now open source, NordVPN's core VPN infrastructure remains secret. This is guaranteed, NordVPN explains in its official announcementthat the core of the application and its authentication systems remain as secure as ever.
With both the GUI and CLI now open source, NordVPN has also made it easier to install the GUI app on a Linux PC as it is now available through the Snap package.
This means that any Linux user can now install a VPN application with a single command and receive updates automatically.
What's next?
switch to Linux GUI instead of a CLI was clearly a good idea for NordVPN as it opened up the app to a whole new group of Linux users. Open-sourcing the code will allow users to have more say in how it works without compromising the security of the underlying VPN service.
However, NordVPN has plans beyond today's launch.
Big news: Meshnet is here to stay. After hearing from our community, we have reversed the decision to discontinue Meshnet. Securely link up to 60 devices. Open source coming soon. Meshnet will remain as you know it. Thank you for sharing your feedback and helping us shape the future. pic.twitter.com/VpnaNTRQxIOctober 2, 2025
The company also intends to implement Meshnet are also open source.
Meshnet is a feature of NordVPN that allows you to set up a virtual network. Up to 60 different devices can be connected on this network, regardless of their location.
This is a surprising statement considering that Meshnet was scheduled to go offline in December 2025. user reviews convinced NordVPN to keep itand, like the Linux GUI, it can still thrive thanks to the contributions of a dedicated community.
