Nokia Bell Laboratories there is something to celebrate. The research giant celebrated its 100th anniversary in May at its venerable campus in Murray Hill, part of New Providence, New Jersey, where important technological developments such as Microprocessor Bellmac-32 And satellite earth station known as Horn antennawhat helped prove big bang theory.
The company also held a groundbreaking ceremony on September 4 for its new headquarters in New Brunswick, New Jersey, approximately 32 km south of Murray Hill and 10 km from IEEEOffice in Piscataway.
Construction of the 10-story building with an area of 34,374 square meters is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. Health and Life Sciences Exchange 2 The building, known as HELIX 2, is the second of three planned buildings being built in the city's new innovation district, which is designed to attract research labs, workspaces and office space for startups.
Present at the ceremony Thierry E. Klein, Bell Laboratories President of Solutions Research and Peter VetterPresident of Bell Labs Core Research. Both men IEEE Members. Governor of New Jersey Phil Murphywas there too, as was the mayor of New Brunswick James Cahill and other state and local officials.
“Today’s groundbreaking marks an exciting new chapter in the long history of Bell Labs New Jersey,” Klein said. “As we build and move to HELIX, it continues our legacy of excellence, pioneering spirit and commitment to groundbreaking research on the East Coast. The location offers unique advantages that will accelerate our innovation capabilities and provide greater proximity to academic centers of excellence and fantastic new startups and businesses.”
The new location, he said, “will provide access to a vibrant urban environment that will help us attract the next generation of talent. Access to universities such as Princeton, Rutgers, New Jersey Institute of TechnologyAnd Stevens Institute of Technology incomparable. This is not just a move for the next two, three, four or five years; this will be the home of Bell Labs for a long, long time.”
Innovation Center
Nokia Bell Laboratories Murphy noted that she could have moved her headquarters anywhere in the world, but chose to remain in New Jersey.
“Our remarkable history of innovation in New Jersey can be summed up in two words: Bell Labs,” the Governor said. “For more than a century, Bell Labs has transformed our state, our nation and the world. It is literally an iconic and globally unique institution. We are breaking ground and beginning to build a new foundation for quantum physics, generative artificial intelligenceAnd optical communication. Through partnerships, joint ventures and subsidiaries, Nokia Bell Labs will help create new products and companies that will [continue to] stimulate the innovation economy in New Jersey.”
To ensure New Jersey is at the forefront of innovation, the Governor announced in 2018 his intention to create 12 innovation centers throughout the state as a way to attract entrepreneursstartups and early stage companies. The first center, the HELIX 1 building adjacent to the new Nokia Bell Labs headquarters, is expected to open next year and will house the Rutgers Medical School and Translation Research Institute.

The facilities will have furnished offices and laboratories equipped with scientific equipment, officials said. Tenants will include Hackensack Meridian Health And Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health.
New Brunswick is no stranger to innovation, Cahill noted. Johnson and Johnson pharmaceutical The company has its headquarters in the city and began its operations in a local wallpaper factory. Johnson brothers and Thomas Edison According to the mayor, they often had lunch at a nearby pharmacy, where they discussed advances in production. Edison's laboratory was located in Menlo Park.. Cahill also said that Albert Einsteinwho worked in Princeton University and lived in the city, he was often seen walking the streets of New Brunswick, located about 30 km away.
Modern research equipment
According to Klein, the new Nokia Bell Lab offices will serve the needs of research scientists and specialists in specific fields.
“It is an efficient, modern and low carbon facility that provides sustainable power, heating and cooling capabilities,” he said. “Our researchers will have access to better opportunities. This is our dream.”
This isn't the first time Bell Labs has changed its headquarters, Vetter said. The main R&D activities were organized in New York in 1925. They moved to Murray Hill in 1941. Over the next decade, some of the world's biggest innovations were developed there, including transistors and the cellular network.
“I'd like to think that our move will once again be a catalyst for disruptive innovations that will happen in the decade after we move, in various areas such as 7G, artificial intelligence, quantum computingand the security of quantum networks,” Vetter said.

“We also need to make sure that the research is done in the real world,” he said. “We like to say that if someone has a problem in the real world and you solve it in the lab but don't make the technological leap into the real world, the problem still exists.
“This is not just research or breakthrough technology,” he added. “Companies are also being created that will commercialize these technologies and lead innovation for the next century.”
IEEE Milestones Celebrate Bell Labs Innovation
Another festive event is planned for October 21 in Murray Hill. Several technologies developed there will be designated as IEEE milestones. Technologies include three Nobel Prize winners: super-resolution microscopy, charge coupled deviceAnd fractional quantum hall effect. IEEE Region 1 And IEEE North Jersey Section sponsored the nominations.
Under control IEEE History Center and supported donors, Milestones The program recognizes outstanding technical developments around the world.
