The award was awarded to John Clark, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis for “experiments that revealed quantum physics in action,” said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
“It was softly expressed, this was a surprise of my life,” said 83-year-old Clark to reporters on the phone by phone after he was told about his victory.
He paid tribute to two other laureates, saying that “their contributions are simply overwhelming.”
“Our discovery in a sense is the basis of quantum calculations. Currently at this moment, this is not entirely clear to me, ”said Clark, who is a British, but conducted his research at the University of California in Berkeley.

The Nobel winners conducted experiments in the 1980s with an electronic chain built of superconductors, and demonstrated that quantum mechanics could also affect everyday objects under certain conditions.

Artificial intelligence pioneers John Hopfield and Jeffrey Hinton won a physical prize last year for help in creating construction blocks of machine learning.
