Edmonton – the head of the Alberta Teachers Association says no negotiations are planned, and on Monday 51,000 teachers will begin to get into the picket lines as a result of a strike in the province.
Jason Shilling says the teachers sent a clear message on Monday evening, stunning, rejecting the last contract proposal from the government of Prime Minister Daniel Smith.
Shilling, in an interview with Corus Radio, says that the government’s proposal to increase wages by 12 percent for four years and a promise to hire another 3,000 teachers is a fall in the bucket compared to catching the wages and reducing crowded classrooms.
He says that the government’s proposal that teachers are not related to their requirements is “ridiculous.”
Finance Minister Neut Horner says that he is disappointed with voting, as a result of which almost 90 percent of teachers reject the deal.
Horner also accused the leaders of the trade unions for not clearly explaining to government negotiations that the teachers were looking for.
