No charges laid in fatal Ontario crash that killed 4 students, 1 teacher

Ontario Provincial Police say they have completed their investigation into the catastrophic collision that killed four students and a teacher and left families and communities grieving.

In a video posted on social networks, AKI reported the investigation into the case fatal collision in Middlesex County has formally concluded and no charges will be filed.

“After reviewing all the evidence and circumstances, no charges will be filed in relation to this incident,” said Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said in a post Tuesday.

Collision Happened May 23 at Thorndale Road and Cobble Hills Road as an SUV containing four teenage girls and their coach was returning from a softball tournament.

The car collided with a semi-truck and then a second SUV around 4:30 p.m.

Three girls – two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old – died on the spot.

The driver, 33-year-old teacher and coach Matt Eckert, and another 16-year-old girl were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but died at the hospital.

Passengers in the second SUV and the truck driver suffered minor injuries.

Eckert, remembered as a dedicated mentor to the Owen Sound NorthStars Junior B lacrosse club, was widely mourned throughout the region.

Messages of Condolence streams poured in, including from Premier Doug Ford, who said he was “devastated” by the tragedy.

The OPP says it “continues to express our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed.”

Police say no further information is expected.
