Nintendo has increased its Switch 2 sales forecasts following the device's strong performance in the last fiscal quarter.
As announced in its release for the second quarter ending September 30The Japanese gaming giant has sold 10.36 million Switch consoles since the device launched in early June. This led Nintendo to increase projected Switch 2 sales to 19 million Switch 2s by March 31, 2026, more than 25 percent higher than the original estimate of 15 million.
Impressively, the 10.36 million units sold figure is significantly higher than the 4.7 million Switch units that were moved in the same period following that console's March 2017 launch. Aside from the obviously high level of anticipation for the Switch 2, it's also worth noting that Nintendo had a lot more inventory for the new console compared to its predecessor. This meant that many people could simply walk into a store or buy the Switch 2 online without any problem, while the original Switch continually sold out for months after launch.
The Switch 2 doesn't just outperform its predecessor. By comparison, Sony's rival PlayStation 5 took eight months to reach 10 million in sales, while the Switch 2 did it in half that time. (Microsoft, for its part, doesn't disclose sales of its Xbox Series X/S consoles, but they have reportedly been significantly below the PS5 since all consoles debuted in November 2020.)
It should also be noted that since Nintendo's fiscal quarter ended in September, Nintendo's large lineup of holiday games was not included in these latest sales figures. In particular, the company has just launched the long-awaited Pokemon Legends: ZA on Switch 2 and Switch, with the nearly six million copies sold in its first week being split almost equally between the two consoles.. In addition, the company has Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment (November 6, Switch 2 only) Kirby Air Riders (November 20, Switch 2 only) and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (December 4, Switch and Switch 2). These games, as well as the usual assortment of third-party games, will undoubtedly drive further demand for the Switch 2 in the next quarter.
Other numbers presented in Nintendo's latest earnings report include the Switch 2 launch title. World of Mario Kart sold 9.57 million copies (meaning a 92 percent stick rate), 8.1 million of which were bundled with the Switch 2 and other Switch 2 exclusives Donkey Kong Bananza moving 3.49 million copies.
Overall, these are impressive numbers, especially considering that the Switch 2 is quite expensive: $630 (console only) and $700 (console only).World of Mario Kart bunch). Meanwhile, the games themselves have also become more expensive this time around, as games such as Bananza costs 100 dollars, and Mario Karting world costs $110.
Oh, and another interesting revelation: the original Switch sold 154.01 million units, which is only a hair less than the Nintendo DS, which sold 154.02 million. Given that the Switch is still supported, it will undoubtedly surpass the DS soon (if it doesn't already happen within a month of Nintendo collecting this data) to become the second best-selling video game system (console or handheld) of all time, behind only Sony's PS2 (160.63 million units). What a comeback from the Wii U.
