TMZ has a new documentary…”TMZ Investigates: Reiner Murders: What Really Happened– airs Friday at 8:00 pm ET on FOX. In the document, we explain that around 2020, Nick was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder… a condition that presents with symptoms of schizophrenia, including delusions, hallucinations and disorganized thinking, and symptoms of mood disorders, including mania and severe depression.
Our sources say Nick was on medication for schizoaffective disorder for a month before the murders… we're told the medication was working fine. For some reason, the doctors decided to change the medication. Our sources haven't said why the doctors made this decision… only that we would be shocked to learn a reason that we're told doesn't make sense.
We were told that the change in medications had left Nick in a dead end. He became agitated, erratic and increasingly dangerous. Our sources say Rob and Michelle were alarmed by what they saw but didn't know what to do.

Our sources say that by the time of the murders, Nick was completely out of touch with reality. We're told doctors didn't try to admit Nick to a mental hospital while they tried to adjust his medications and stabilize his condition.
We're told this may be the basis of Nick's defense – doctors set Nick on a path that made him legally insane. Under California law… a defendant does not have to prove that he did not know the difference between right and wrong to use the defense of insanity… only that he did not understand the nature and quality of his act.
