NHL Roundup: Lightning beat Avalanche for eighth consecutive win

TAMPA, Fla. – Brandon Hagel tied the game in the third period with his 20th goal of the season and led the Tampa Bay Lightning to their eighth straight win with a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday.

Jake Guentzel and Zemgus Girgensons also scored for the Lightning, and Anthony Cirelli added an empty-net goal. Nikita Kucherov recorded his seventh straight multi-point game with a pair of assists.

Andrei Vasilevskiy finished the game with 31 saves for his sixth straight win.

Parker Kelly and Brock Nelson scored for Colorado, which dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Avalanche have suffered just three losses to the starting lineup in the season that begins Tuesday.

Scott Wedgwood stopped 24 shots for Colorado.

Hagel scored the game-winner after Kucherov defended the puck near the left circle, found Max Crozier, who cut into the slot before finding Hagel for a sweeping one-timer at 8:31 of the third period. Cirelli scored into an empty net with 1:25 left in the match.

RALEIGH, N.C. — K'Andre Miller scored twice and Andrei Svechnikov had four assists as Carolina beat Dallas.

In a game filled with individual storylines, the Hurricanes were chasing Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger midway through the second period while leading 5-1.

Logan Stankoven scored for Carolina against his former team, which traded him here last year at the trade deadline that sent Mikko Rantanen to Dallas.

The Hurricanes acquired Rantanen last January in a three-team deal, although he only played 13 games before Carolina moved him when it became clear he wouldn't sign a contract extension. Rantanen was booed throughout his return to Raleigh and heard chants of “Logan better!” after Stankoven beat Rantanen for a first-period goal from the slot.

Rantanen eventually scored with a forehand backhand early in the third inning, beating Brandon Bussey and drawing even more hearty cheers as well as roaring jeers as he headed to the penalty box midway through the period.

Carolina's goal leader Seth Jarvis returned from an eight-game absence with an upper-body injury and scored a goal that knocked Oettinger out of the game after the goaltender mishandled the puck behind the net.

Shane Gostisbehere and William Carrier also scored for Carolina, Nikolaj Ehlers added three assists and Bussy made 19 saves.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Alex Tuch had a goal and an assist as Buffalo beat Vancouver for its 11th win in 12 games.

Tage Thompson, Ryan McLeod, Zach Metsa and Josh Doan also scored for Buffalo, which lost 5-1 at Columbus on Saturday to snap a 10-game winning streak. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 32 shots.

Jake DeBrusk, Elias Pettersson and Liam Ogren scored third-period goals and Brock Boeser had two assists for the Canucks, who have lost four straight (0-2-2) and six of seven (1-4-2). Thatcher Demko had 15 saves.

Vancouver trailed 4-0 in the third period before DeBrusk ended Luukkonen's bid for his first shutout of the season with a power-play goal on the rebound of Kiefer Sherwood's attempt at 10:17.

Less than five minutes later, Petterson put the Canucks up 4-2, put the puck in the slot, turned and fired past Luukkonen.

Ogren led Vancouver 39 seconds later, scoring from the left circle through a traffic jam between Luukkonen's pads.

Doan sealed the Sabers' victory with his 13th of the season into an empty net with 1:24 left.

PHILADELPHIA — Trevor Zegras scored twice for Philadelphia in his first game against his former team, leading them to victory over Anaheim.

Cutter Gauthier scored his 20th goal of the season for the Ducks in Game 2 in Philadelphia against the franchise he forced into trading – and turned him into one of Philadelphia's greatest sports villains.

On the night the Flyers honored late founder Ed Snyder, the arena was packed with fans happy to once again root for the team in its playoff bid.

Flyers fans mostly showed up to boo Gauthier and chant obscenities. They roared in the second period when Garnet Hathaway cleanly pinned Gauthier to the boards.

Cam York and Travis Sanheim also scored for the Flyers, and Nikita Gregbenkin added an empty-net goal. Alex Killorn had a goal for Anaheim.

NEW YORK — Anthony Duclair scored his first hat trick in more than six years, Ilya Sorokin stopped all 44 shots he faced in his return from injury and New York handed New Jersey its second straight loss.

Returning to the lineup after being healthy for the last two games, Duclair scored three straight goals from 4:01 in the first period to 3:29 in the second and also had two assists in a five-point performance. His fourth NHL hat trick was his first since Dec. 14, 2019, four teams ago, when he was with the Ottawa Senators.

Sorokin was exceptional, showing no rust in his first game action since Dec. 19, finishing as the club's career leader in 26th place. He left the game with what the Islanders called a “debilitating lower-body injury.”

At the other end of the rink, Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom allowed goals on the first two shots he faced (Mat Barzal and Duclair) and three on five, while scoring nine on 24. His teammates failed to bounce back from Sunday's home loss to Carolina in a game in which junior defenseman Luke Hughes put the puck into his own net twice.

TORONTO — Matthew Nice scored to help Auston Matthews push Toronto to victory over defending Stanley Cup champion Florida.

Easton Cowan also scored for the Maple Leafs, and Bobby McMann scored into an empty net.

Former Maple Leafs draft pick Carter Verhaeghe beat Joseph Wall's shutout call with 8:22 left as Toronto won its sixth straight at Scotiabank Arena. The Panthers have only lost once this season.

Knies made it 2-0 early in the second period. Then, less than four minutes later, he set up Matthews with a pass forward to take the captain's lead in the 21st.

Former Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin was in attendance. He participated in the pregame ceremony celebrating Matthews becoming the franchise's all-time leader in goals. Sundin had a mark of 420. Matthews now has a mark of 422.

Matthews has seven goals and 11 points in five games since the three-day Christmas break and was thwarted by Florida goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky on a power play break early in the game.

Florida beat the home team 32-23.

Cole Perfetti, Luke Schenn and Kyle Connor scored for Winnipeg, while Gabriel Vilardi had two assists. Connor Hellebuyck had 27 saves as the Jets fell to 0-6-4 during their losing streak.

Winnipeg's Dylan Samberg was ejected for tripping late in the extra period, and Mitch Marner fired a puck that bounced off Hertl and into the net as he scrambled in front of Hellebuyck.

Perfetti beat Hart with a backhand at 5:16 to score in 16 games. He rolled on the boards and tapped the glass in celebration.

EDMONTON — Connor McDavid scored three goals, including one on a penalty kick, and Leon Draisaitl had a goal and two assists as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Nashville Predators 6-2 on Tuesday night.

Kasperi Kapanen had a goal and an assist and Curtis Lazar also scored for the Oilers, who suffered a two-game skid. Connor Ingram made 24 saves.

Ryan O'Reilly and Nick Blankenburg scored for the Predators, who have lost two of their last three games. Juuse Saros made 37 saves.

McDavid's power-play goal at 8:53 of the first period gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead and extended his point streak to 16 games. He has 15 goals and 22 assists during this period.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Alex Wennberg had a goal and an assist against his former team, and San Jose bounced back from a disappointing loss three days earlier to beat Columbus.

Zach Ostapchuk also scored and McLean Celebrini and Mario Ferraro scored empty-netters to help the Sharks win their fourth game in five games. Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 34 shots for San Jose, which lost 7-3 to Tampa Bay on Saturday night.

Wennberg, a first-round draft pick of the Blue Jackets in 2013, assisted Pavol Regende in the first period and then scored on the power play early in the second for his eighth goal of the season. That moved the 31-year-old within two points of reaching 400 career points.

Celebrini's goal was his 23rd of the season and extended the 19-year-old's scoring streak to 11 games.

Zach Werenski scored his team-high 16th goal for Columbus, and Sean Monahan also scored. Jet Greaves finished the game with 31 saves.

Matty Beniers, Vince Dunn and Freddie Gaudreau each had two assists, and Joey Daccord finished with 32 saves.

David Pastrnak had two goals, Viktor Arvidsson had a goal and an assist and Mason Lorey also scored for the Bruins. Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves.

Meyers scored with 1:37 left in the second period to give Seattle a 3–2 lead, and McCann made it 4–2 with a power-play goal with a half-second left in the period.

Kakko made it 5-2 midway through the third period and Catton scored his second goal of the night with 5:40 left – one period after he scored his first career goal in a game in which Kakko recorded his 100th career assist.

Lorey and Arvidsson scored less than 3 minutes apart to put the Bruins within two, but Kakko tied it with an empty net with 12 seconds left.
