WASHINGTON — Alex Ovechkin scored his 900th career NHL goal as the Washington Capitals beat the St. Louis Blues 6-1 on Wednesday night.
Ovechkin's 900th goal came at 2:39 of the second period, when he caught Jakob Chykrun's rebound off the boards and backhanded the ball to Jordan Binnington.
The 40-year-old is the only player in NHL history to reach the milestone, and the bench cleared to mark his achievement as Binnington tried to hide the iconic puck by hiding it in his pants. Lineman Michel Cormier recovered the puck.
Anthony Beauvillier and Tom Wilson each scored two goals, John Carlson also scored and Jakob Chykrun had three assists for Washington, which snapped a four-game losing streak.
Alexei Toropchenko scored the only goal for the Blues, who have lost eight of their last nine matches.
