NFL news: Kevin Stefanski fired as Cleveland Browns head coach after 6 seasons

Two-time NFL Coach of the Year Kevin Stefanski became the latest coach to be fired this season after six seasons with the team. Cleveland Browns, the team announced Monday.

The Haslam family announced a coaching change after Stefanski led the Browns to a 5-12 finish, including Sunday's 20-18 win over the Browns. Cincinnati Bengals.

“We are extremely grateful to Kevin for his leadership of the Cleveland Browns over the past six seasons,” managing directors and principal partners Dee and Jimmy Haslam said in a statement. “He is a good football coach and an even better person. We appreciate all of his hard work and dedication to our organization, but our results over the past two seasons have not been satisfactory and we believe a change in head coaching position is necessary.”

The team also confirmed that Browns general manager Andrew Berry will remain with the organization and continue to lead football operations.

“Our entire focus is on building a team that will bring our fans the success they have long deserved, and we will continue to work tirelessly to achieve that goal and invest every resource necessary to build a winning football program. Andrew will immediately begin a thorough search process to find an outstanding new head coach and leader for our football team. We have an exciting young core to build on and Andrew and his team are committed to adding talent to that core and building a squad that can achieve sustained success.”

Stefanski, 43, was first hired by the organization in 2020, where he ended the team's long playoff drought dating back to 2002. He ended that season with the Browns' first playoff victory in nearly three decades.

In six seasons with the Browns, Stefanski had two 11-win seasons and two playoff appearances. His overall record is 46-58.

“After six seasons as head coach of the Cleveland Browns, I leave with a tremendous sense of gratitude,” Stefanski said in a statement provided by the team. “Sincere thanks to everyone I have had the pleasure of working with over these six seasons. I would especially like to thank my coaching staff and players who have done everything that has ever been asked of them. They fought through injuries and adversity, always putting THE TEAM FIRST. I wish you all nothing but success.”

Stefanski is the fourth NFL coach to be fired this season. He joined Tennessee's Brian Callahan, New York Giants' Brian Daboll and the Atlanta coach. Raheem Morris, who was fired hours after the team's 19-17 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
