NFL news: Giants reportedly fire Brian Daboll as head coach

Brian Daboll runs with New York Giants came to an end on Monday as the team allowed another fourth-quarter comeback to doom them, handing them their eighth loss of the season.

Multiple reports indicate that the team and Daboll have parted ways, an unusual move for an organization that typically prefers to wait until the end of the season to make a decision on a coaching change. He is the second head coach fired by the Giants mid-year since Tom Coughlin left the franchise. The team fired Bob McAdoo before the end of the 2017 season.

Daboll was the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2021 and is credited with helping turn the corner Josh Allen into an MVP candidate during his tenure. The hope was that he could do the same with Daniel Jones, as both quarterbacks had similar characteristics.

In Daboll's first season, the Giants went from 4-13 to 9-7-1 and made the playoffs under head coach Joe Judge. Jones led New York to a road playoff win over the Minnesota Vikings before losing to the Philadelphia Eagles. But there was hope that the Giants could return to the proud organization they once were on the football field.

Ultimately, injuries and inconsistent play doomed the Daboll era that began in year two. He will never again have a winning record as the Giants' head coach, even though the team ranked first in run-to-giveaway ratio in 2022. Daboll never had more than six wins in New York after reaching the playoffs in his debut season as a manager.

In 2025, there was some hope that New York could turn things around. The team selected Abdul Carter to join him. Brian BurnsKayvon Thibodeau and Dexter Lawrence on defense. He made a move on Jackson Dart late in the first round of the draft, and for the most part, it paid dividends as the Ole Miss standout became one of the brightest players in the recruiting class.

The team's inability to complete games did not inspire hope in the first 10 weeks of the season.

The Giants' two wins this year have come at home against the Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles. But games that looked like wins over the Dallas Cowboys Denver Broncos and the Bears were a crushing reminder of how far the team is from playoff contention.

New York offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will reportedly serve as interim head coach. He has been the offensive coordinator since 2022 and was promoted to assistant head coach in 2024.

Daboll, the 2022 NFL Coach of the Year, finishes his Giants career with a 20-40-1 record.
