NFL news: Chargers’ Denzel Perryman suspended after bad hit on Cowboys’ Ryan Flournoy

NFL suspended Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman for two games without pay after “repeated violations of game rules intended to protect the health and safety of players” following unnecessary roughness in Sunday's win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Perryman was tagged for his attack on Cowboys wide receiver Ryan Flournoy, where he delivered a “hard blow to the helmet” while the receiver was already on the ground.

The NFL added that Perryman violated a rule that prohibits “using any part of a helmet or face mask to strike or make forceful contact with the head or neck area of ​​an opponent.”

Perryman, 33, is no stranger to league discipline for illegal hits on the net. He had to miss three games after being suspended in 2023 for improper helmet use.

Perryman has also been fined four times in his 11-year career for either improper helmet use or rough handling of a passer.

Perryman plans to appeal his suspension, according to multiple reports.

The Chargers are looking to make the playoffs with their remaining two games, where they will face the similarly situated Houston Texans in Week 17. Denver Broncoswho already qualified for the playoffs in week 18.

Depending on how the Broncos and Chargers perform in Week 17, their regular season finale could be a division title.

If the season were to end today, the Chargers would be ranked fifth in the AFC, but that would still mean they would be heading to their first playoff game.

That's what they did last season when they lost to the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium.

Perriman played in 10 games for the Chargers this season, making 47 combined tackles with three passes defensed. He has been a starter for the Chargers since being selected by them in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Miami.

The Chargers' defense, led by coordinator Jesse Minter, has been a solid group all season. They rank third in yards allowed per game (283.1) and eighth in points allowed (20.1).
