New scam text targets Freedom Mobile customers

Freedom Mobile customers should be wary of text scams that trick people into going to a fake website to resolve a billing issue.

Some clients posted on Reddit that they received messages purporting to be from Freedom Mobile warning them that the automatic payment had failed. The messages ask customers to log into the Freedom website to update their payment information. However, the link in the text leads to a fake website that looks like the Freedom login page.

While the in-text link may be a dead giveaway for some more tech-savvy users, others may not catch the illegal URL and think they are on the real Freedom website. Anyone tricked by a fake login page could unintentionally provide sensitive information such as their Freedom account login, other personal information, or worse, even payment information.

Moreover, we reported last week on the recent Freedom data breachwhich resulted in access to some customers' personal information. This could give scammers a list of targets they can pursue, or allow them to use leaked personal information to carry out more sophisticated scams.

It is always important to remain vigilant, especially for Freedom customers after the recent hack. As a general rule, it's best not to click on links in text messages, regardless of who the message is from. If a company contacts you about payment or any other issue, it is safer to go to the company's website yourself rather than clicking on any link contained in the message or email.

If you receive fraudulent or fraudulent messages like these, it's also worth taking a few minutes to report it. The RCMP recently launched a national website dedicated to reporting cybercrime and fraud.which allows Canadians submit online reports about similar cases of cybercrime.
