These additional features should come as welcome news to fans looking for new ways to play PC games from a certain era. PC Gaming Wiki lists over 400 items written using D3D7 APIs, and while most of these games were released between 2000 and 2004, several new D3D7 games continued to be released until 2022.
The list of D3D7 games predictably contains a lot of licensed stuff, but there are also such well-remembered games as Escape from Monkey Island, Fatal Hearthand original Hitman: Codename 47. WinterSnowfall writes that the project was inspired by the desire to play games such as Sacrifice And students 2 on top of the existing dxvk structure.
Despite some known issues with some D3D7 gamesWinterSnowfall writes that the recent tweak means that “most supported games are now doing somewhere between decent and stellar.” However, the project's author warns that the project will likely never achieve full compatibility, as “D3D7 is the land of cursed API compatibility.”
Don't expect this project to expand to include support for even older DirectX APIs, WinterSnowfall warns. “D3D7 is already quite a challenge and a mess,” the author writes. “The further we stray from D3D9, the further we stray from the divine.”
