Horror visionaries James Wan and Jason Blum are working with Paramount Pictures to bring in a new Paranormal activity film in cinemas.
Rumors of a found footage franchise revival come from TPPwhich announces the series' first new film since 2021. Immediate family already in work. Wang, best known for his work as director of The Conjuring and the original Saw, serves as a producer alongside Blum through Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.
Paramount is co-financing, co-producing and distributing, with original director Oren Peli also attached as a producer through Solana Films. Stephen Schneider of Room 101 Inc. will also executive produce alongside Blumhouse-Atomic Monster's Michael Clear and Judson Scott. Alaina Glastal will oversee the company.
Details surrounding the creative team behind the new Paranormal Activity film, as well as its plot and release date, remain a mystery. While it's unclear exactly when the project will be fully realized, it is said to be “a priority for both Paramount and the Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.”
Wan has touched on everything from Insidious to Aquaman, but working with the supernatural creatures of Paranormal Activity opens up new horizons for the director. The low-budget original was a huge success upon its 2007 premiere, grossing just under $200 million worldwide (via Cashier Mojo) with its small scale, simple premise, and dedication to found footage horror.
“I’ve been a big fan of Paranormal Activity since the brilliant first film, with its creeping, slow build-up and subtle ability to make the unseen scary,” Wan said. “I look forward to expanding his legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this chilling found footage franchise.”
Paranormal Activity's strong start naturally spawned sequels before taking a break in 2015 for the sixth film, Ghost Dimension. “Next of Kin” was seen as a reboot of sorts for the ghost movie franchise ahead of its release on Paramount+, but failed to gain much critical traction (we gave it a 4/10) and fans. It's unclear whether Wan, Blum, Peli, and Paramount's eighth film Paranormal Activity will acknowledge the events of past films.
“Diving with James into the exciting revival of the franchise that started it all for Blumhouse is exactly what we dreamed of when we teamed up with Atomic Monster,” added Blum. “I will be actively working with him to present this new chapter. Luckily, we are able to spend a little more than the $15,000 we had on the first film, but one thing will remain the same – don't watch it alone.”
We gave Paranormal Activity 8/10 review after its release. We called it one of our favorite haunted house movies of 2018. You can read more at official Paranormal Activity video game scheduled to launch in 2026.
