Where the winds meet saw a fairly successful launch, reaching more than two million players in its opening weekend and quickly racked up “very positive” reviews on Steam – but it looks like the open-world MMO isn't done breaking benchmarks just yet.
Although it's only been two weeks since Where Winds Meet launched worldwide on Steam and PlayStation 5, the stunning MMO with fast-paced Sekiro-style combat is tearing up the charts and shows no signs of stopping. As developer Everstone Studio explains in a new online project mailthe game managed to attract over nine million players in the short few weeks it was freely available.
“The wind rises in the bamboo forest, and with sword in hand we enter Jianghu,” says Everstone Studio in an announcement. “9 million wanderers have left our humble abode among the bamboo. Thank you”. This is, of course, not a figure to laugh at, but I can’t say that it surprises me. In the end, this is the same game that saw its the developers assure players that they will not have to pay for anything to succeed or enjoy it.

In the comments, fans are praising the system, with one person calling Where Winds Meet “another shining example of a live service game done right: gameplay and player satisfaction FIRST.” This becomes even more unsurprising when you look at his Steam page and its nearly 40,000 reviews—reviews that collectively yield a “Very Positive” star rating. Countless reviews reflect this sentiment that it's a fun but free game, and many have already logged over 100 hours of play time.
Official “Most Popular” Steam Charts Next, let's talk about the success of Where Winds Meet, as this MMO is currently in fifth place, ahead of the likes Battlefield 6. It's obviously impossible to predict how long this will all last, but it's nice to see a new face pop up in a genre that is arguably dominant in other ways (I'm looking at you, Final Fantasy 14 and World of Warcraft). Also, at this point it clearly does Very Fine.
Here's hoping that Where Winds Meet's future looks as bright as its journey so far, and the numbers continue to climb – nine million in two weeks is no small feat, but with so little time, I feel the MMO can achieve even more.
