This single-player game, inspired by the world of D&D, will debut next year.

Just announced at The Game Awards, WARLOK: DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS It's a new game that won't be out for a couple of years, but I think it's already giving us cause for excitement.

I had the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session with the developers very early on at last week's press conference ahead of today's announcement, with the Montreal team at Invoke Studios aiming to create an “immersive single-player open world game” inspired by the universe D&D.

Invoke is a new team made up of developers who have worked on games such as Far Cry, Watch_Dogs, Deus Ex, And Guardians of the Galaxyincluding Q&A Studio founder Jeff Hattem and general manager Dominique Guay. While they couldn't go into detail because development is still early and ongoing, the team was very enthusiastic.

CHARLOCK It stars a female protagonist named Kaatri, and according to the developers, she is on a mission that is both “personal and urgent.” The heroine will be voiced by Trisha Helfer, known in the nerd and gaming communities as Sarah Kerrigan in Starcraft IIEDI in Mass Effectand number six in Battlestar Galactica.

“Working with our colleagues at Wizards of the Coast on a brand as rich as D&D gave the team the creative freedom and support to create an ambitious new open-world experience for players,” Guay said in a press release. “We are pleased to finally announce CHARLOCK and look forward to sharing more gameplay details in the future.”

Players will “use smart spellcraft in every aspect of the game, whether it's exploring the world, solving problems, slaying monsters, and you'll do it all in your own creative way, using all the spells in every aspect of the game,” Hattem teased during the Q&A session.

While the game is currently shrouded in mystery, Invoke states that the game “gives players the ability to use magic to overcome a wide range of challenges,” such as exploration, where “each spell is a key, unlocking new paths and opportunities in a beautiful yet troubling world.” In terms of gameplay, fighting enemies involves “magic and melee combat” which “combine for a combat experience that is both tactical and visceral.”

Invoke said you don't need extensive D&D knowledge (or dice) for the game CHARLOCK as it is an open world action game, but those familiar with the lore and the Warlock class will likely find even more excitement within. As for the game itself, it's not a choose-your-own adventure, although you will have “freedom of choice” in what you do, as Kaatri and the game are based on a written story that also features a “dynamic world that reacts to you.”

The debut trailer is all there is to it for now, but Invoke have promised a gameplay debut in the summer of 2026 before the full game releases next year. Judging by the teaser and the experienced team working behind the scenes, I think we can look forward to hearing more about this project before it releases on PC, PS5 and Xbox.
