Nelly Furtado is entering a new chapter in her life.
On InstagramThe “Promisculous” singer announced she would be stepping back from performing music to pursue other opportunities.
She shared the news by posting a photo taken 25 years ago when her first album, “Whoa, Nelly!” was released, as well as a recent video of her in Berlin waving goodbye to her fans from the stage.
“I have decided to step away from performing for the foreseeable future and pursue other creative and personal endeavors that I feel will better suit the next phase of my life,” she wrote. “I really enjoyed my career and I still love writing music as I always considered it a hobby that I was lucky enough to turn into a career.”
“I will always consider myself a songwriter. I am grateful for all the years of fun, communication and wonder,” she added.
Furtado concluded her post by thanking “everyone who has ever listened to and vibed with my music and attended any of my shows.”
“I love you and your open hearts,” she said.
During her career, Furtado has released seven studio albums and had three hits. topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
She released her seventh album, “7,” in September 2024. She previously told TODAY.com this album was different because “I love myself more and have more confidence in myself.”
“I’ve learned a lot and I have boundaries,” Furtado said. “I've tried all my ideas before – I've always co-produced all my albums – but this time it was different. It was total freedom, total liberation in the (studio) – just trying everything I wanted.”
In January, the Say It Right singer opened up about the pressure she faced in the music industry about her appearance.
On InstagramShe said: “This year has made me realize the aesthetic pressures of my work in a whole new way, while simultaneously experiencing a new level of self-love and genuine confidence from within.
“For those wondering, I have never had any facial or body surgery or augmentation, other than getting veneers on my top row of teeth just recently,” she said, sharing some more beauty secrets like drinking water.
“My New Year's message for 2025 is to express yourself freely, celebrate your individuality and know that it's completely okay to be okay with what you see in the mirror,” she said. “And it’s okay to want something different. We're all cute little people who just jump on the ground looking for hugs.”
