Los Angeles Clippers are parting ways with veteran point guard Chris Paul, it was announced early Wednesday morning.
Nearly two weeks after Paul hinted that this season with the Clippers would likely be his final season in the NBA, Paul announced at 3 a.m. on social media that the team was sending him home ahead of a road game against the Clippers. Atlanta Hawks.

“Just found out I’m being sent home,” Paul wrote on Instagram Story with a peace emoji.

Lawrence Frank, the Clippers' executive basketball executive, issued a statement confirming Paul's departure and indicated that the team would try to trade Paul, who signed a $3.6 million deal, to return to the team.
“We are parting ways with Chris and he will no longer be part of the team,” he said, via the Associated Press. “We will work with him in the next stage of his career. Chris is a legendary Clipper with a historic career.”
Paul is in his 21st year of playing. NBA season. Last month, reports suggested that this year would be his final season before retiring, a rumor he appeared to confirm with a social media post that read in part: “What a ride… Still so much left… THANKFUL for this final season!!”

But offseason projections of them being a championship contender quickly faded this season as the Clippers sit at 5-16. Paul, a future Hall of Famer, has a career average of 2.6. points and 3.3 assists per game. He also averages 14.3 minutes per game.
In a statement, Frank said the team doesn't “blame” Paul for the poor start.
“I want to make one thing clear. Nobody blames Chris for our failures. I take responsibility for the record we have now. There are many reasons why we struggled. We are grateful for the impact Chris has had on the franchise.”
