As law enforcement officials investigate the killing of National Guard members in Washington, D.C., U.S. immigration policy has undergone rapid change.
The Trump administration has abruptly stopped processing any immigration requests from Afghan citizens, and the president has vowed to further tighten the immigration crackdown.
President Trump on Sunday said he had spoken with the families of National Guard members and invited both families to the White House.
Here's what we know.
D.C. police increase security for military personnel
Federal authorities and the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed Saturday that each National Guard team patrolling the city will be accompanied by at least one D.C. police officer, although details were scant. (The development was first reported Washington Post.)
According to a police official who spoke to NPR on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the issue, officers should be paid for overtime to ensure they are not distracted from ongoing policing tasks.
The order does not apply to areas the police department does not patrol, such as national monuments, the U.S. Capitol or D.C. transit centers that are controlled by other law enforcement agencies.

Sarah Beckstrom, 20, of Summersville, West Virginia, enlisted in 2023. Beckstrom's father, Gary, called her his “daughter” and said she “went on to stardom” in Facebook post on Thursday.
West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey on Friday called on residents to observe a moment of silence for the two shooting victims as both were deployed with that state's National Guard.
Morrisey said in a statement Friday that Beckstrom made the “ultimate sacrifice” in service to her state and nation. He added that both Beckstrom and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolf, 24, stepped forward and volunteered for the Washington mission.
Morrisey also said Wolfe remains in “very critical condition.”
“These two West Virginia heroes were serving our country and defending our nation's capital when they were maliciously attacked,” Morrisey said. “Their courage and devotion to duty represent the best of our state.”

The suspect is now charged with first-degree murder.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the 29-year-old Afghan national who allegedly shot and killed members of the National Guard, has now been charged with first-degree murder.
D.C. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said this during Fox News interview On Friday, charges against Lakanwala were upgraded to first-degree murder and that there are “many more charges to come.”
Lakanwal, who was 5 years old when the war in Afghanistan began, immigrated to the United States in 2021 as American troops withdrew from Afghanistan and the Taliban overthrew his government. Lacanwal worked with elite anti-terrorism unitwhich was run by the CIA, according to AfghanEvac, a nonprofit run by U.S. veterans and others who served in Afghanistan. The organization said such specialized units were used to carry out extremely brutal covert missions.
According to CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Lacanwal was able to move to the United States with his family thanks to the work he performed on behalf of American intelligence.
Officials are searching for leads in the U.S. and abroad as there is no clear motive for the shooting.
Trump administration suspends all asylum decisions
The administration is sharply tightening its controversial immigration policies.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that he would “permanently suspend migration from all Third World countries to allow the US system to fully recover.”
US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Joseph Edlow also published on Xthat the agency has “suspended all asylum decisions until we can ensure that every alien is screened and screened to the maximum extent possible.”
“The safety of the American people always comes first,” Edlow wrote.
