EXCLUSIVE: Nana Mensah was promoted to series regular in season 4 Netflixhit political drama Diplomat.
Mensah has been on the show since the first season in the recurring role of Billy Appiah, Billy Appiah's dogged and extremely loyal White House chief of staff, who became much more involved in the story over the course of three seasons as the President of the United States went from being an opaque character to a key figure in US Ambassador Kate Wyler's (Keri Russell) investigation into the bombing of a British aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf. In Season 3, Billie must ingratiate herself with newly minted President Grace Penn (Allison Janney), the same woman she once again called for to be ousted as Vice President.
Mensah is a Ghanaian-American writer, director, actor and producer. She wrote, directed and starred in the feature film Queen of Fame, which premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, where it won the award for Best New Director. The film was also nominated for two Indie Spirit Awards for Best First Feature. On television, Mensa starred in Presumed innocent for Apple with Jake Gyllenhaal. In addition to writing and acting, Mensah has also performed on Broadway in Judge's African Weave and Fear 13 at the Donmar Warehouse opposite Adrien Brody.
