Much of Newfoundland and Labrador is under a winter storm warning for heavy snow and high winds Thursday afternoon and will continue through Friday.
Environment Canada is calling for a snow storm in the Cartwright area along Labrador's east coast, with up to 50 centimeters of snow expected.
Elsewhere in the province, the weather agency said 20 to 35 centimeters of snow could fall with wind speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour, leading to poor visibility and blowing snow.
Newfoundland Power says about 2,000 customers remain without power across the province and the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in St. John's has canceled Christmas mass.
Weather warnings are also in effect for parts of southern Ontario, with freezing rain expected in the Windsor area and parts of the Greater Toronto Area from Friday morning into the evening.
Environment Canada is also warning of bitter cold and strong gusty winds across northern British Columbia and the Yukon, with temperatures dropping to -40 degrees in the Dawson area Thursday night and Friday.
