The battle began in New York City this weekend as the cast of Mortal Kombat II took to the stage to energize fans for round two of the mind-bending franchise. Johnny Cage, Kitana, Jade, and Shao Kahn, aka Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martin Ford, respectively, arrived on the scene and brought with them a behind-the-scenes featurette that showed our heroes battling our favorite toothy guy, Baraka. Additionally, the cast and crew also revealed that the upcoming sequel will not be the final installment of the recently revamped franchise.
Screenwriter Jeremy Slater joined the New York Comic-Con cast and announced to audiences that a third film is already in early development. “Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. really happy with the movie,” Slater said. “They're so excited, they're so convinced there's a huge fan base waiting for them, that they've already hired me to start writing the next part.”
What exactly this will mean is unknown, considering the second film hasn't even been released yet. Release is scheduled for May 15, 2026. Mortal Kombat II was originally scheduled for October 24, 2025.a move that director Simon McQuoid assured fans was actually a great move for the franchise moving forward. Defending the date change, McQuoid told viewers: “We've created a massive summer blockbuster. We should be proud of the fact that Mortal Kombat, both the film and the franchise, is launching next summer. Yes, we will have to wait, but it will be big. This is the reason.”
