Minnesota Fraud Scheme a ‘Top FBI Priority’

FBI Director Cash Patel acknowledged the ongoing fraud scandal unfolding in Minnesota involving day care centers, adding that it was part of a lengthy investigation and will remain a top priority.

Like Breitbart news reportedA video by YouTube journalist Nick Shirley went viral over the weekend after he confronted an employee at a supposed training center in Minnesota that was receiving millions in aid despite no signs of operational activity.

In a post on X, Cash Patel said the FBI was investigating the situation.

“The FBI is aware of recent social media posts in Minnesota. However, even before the public conversation moved online, the FBI deployed personnel and investigative resources to Minnesota to disrupt large-scale fraud schemes exploiting federal programs. Fraud that defrauds taxpayers and defrauds vulnerable children will remain the FBI's top priority in Minnesota and across the country,” he said.

Patel then noted that the FBI “exposed a $250 million fraud scheme that stole federal food assistance intended for vulnerable children during COVID.”

“The investigation uncovered fictitious sellers, shell companies and large-scale money laundering associated with the Feeding Our Future network,” he continued. “This case resulted in 78 indictments and 57 convictions. The defendants included Abdiwahab Ahmed Mohamud, Ahmed Ali, Hussein Farah, Abdullahe Noor Jesou, Asha Farhan Hasan, Usman Kamara and Abdirashid Bixi Dool, each of whom is charged with activities ranging from wire fraud to money laundering and conspiracy.”

Patel concluded that these schemes were “just the tip of a very large iceberg.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson also disclosed Earlier this month, half of the $18 billion in federal welfare funds that have supported 14 Minnesota programs since 2018 was lost to fraud.

“Minnesota has become a magnet for scams, so much so that we have a scam tourism industry where people come to our state solely to exploit and defraud its programs,” Thompson said. “This is a deeply troubling reality that all Minnesotans must understand.”
