Second day in a row New York Mets saw their favorite star agree to terms with another team.
Pete Alonso all-time Mets home run leaderhas reportedly agreed to a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles. The news comes a day after Edwin Diaz, a longtime close friend of the Mets, signed a three-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The 31-year-old slugger was unable to find a long-term deal last season and returned to the Mets on a shorter contract, which he opted out of after this year's World Series. Although the Mets were interested in re-signing him, they reportedly never made an offer as other teams were willing to offer longer, more valuable deals to the first baseman.
Alonso spent his entire Major League Baseball career with the Mets, and last season he broke Darryl Strawberry's home run record. He finishes his Mets career with 264 home runs. He was also incredibly popular among the team's fans due to his good nature and strength, earning him the nickname Polar Bear. The Mets also lost another longtime hot prospect, Brandon Nimmo, in a trade with the Texas Rangers last month.
Alonso had one of the best offensive seasons of his career in 2025 – he hit .272 with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs – but there are concerns about his defense, a weak spot for the Mets, and the base running, and the Mets seemed reluctant to give him a multi-year contract when they already have Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor on expensive long-term deals.
During his Mets career, Alonso hit .253 with 264 home runs, 712 RBIs and an OPS of .857. He was the National League Rookie of the Year in 2019 when he hit 53 home runs and was a five-time All-Star.
Alonso joins an Orioles team that finished last in the AL East last season, although they have several young stars such as Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holliday.
