This little eight-year-old girl who was hit by a car in Oakville last week was a hockey player with a big heart.

Melody Xu was also a guitarist, an older sister, a lover of dressing up for Halloween, and someone who always had a smile on her face.

She also brought smiles to many people's faces during her short life.

Unfortunately, she left – too soon.

Melody and her mom were hit by an SUV that left the roadway on North Service Road, near Lindsay Dr., shortly before 4pm on November 6th.

“She was riding a scooter,” said someone close to the family. “Melody died in hospital due to her injuries and her mom is still in hospital.”

MAN, 47 YEARS OLD, CHARGED

Halton Regional Police have charged Ajay Rana, 47, with dangerous driving causing death.

He was released on bail but is due to appear in Milton Magistrates' Court on December 9.

The allegations have not been tested in court and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

This is as bad as it gets. And the community responded.

Oakville is worried about this – especially her classmates from St. Teresa's Catholic Primary School of Calcutta and her teammates on the Oakville Hornets girls' hockey team.

The Oakville Hornets Women's Hockey Association released a statement saying, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our little Hornet, Melody Xu. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and her U9 Hornets teammates during this unimaginable time.”

THE COMMUNITY IS “LOSED,” SAYS THE CHIEF TANNISHER

Halton Regional Police Chief Steve Tanner said the “entire community” was suffering because of it.

“Everyone is devastated,” he said. “The first photo I saw was of her in her hockey uniform and it really upset me.”

“Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends and fellow hockey players.” The chief said, adding that “the officers and all the first responders who responded to this call are also very upset.”

What a tragedy many felt.

OVER $224,000 RAISED TO HELP THE FAMILY

With the mother still recovering in hospital and the family devastated, funeral arrangements have been delayed and are still pending. There are also family members who have flown in from China to help during this crisis.

“Due to a fatal accident, mom and daughter were rushed to the hospital where sweet, beautiful, loving Melody took her last breath,” Ana Lopez states in a GoFundMe appeal. “Now they face not only the unimaginable grief of losing their little girl while caring for their youngest son (of three in total), but also mounting practical burdens: medical bills, funeral and memorial expenses, time off from work, the ongoing care and recovery of their mother, and a long road ahead emotionally and financially.”

In his terrible story, there is nothing that can be done to bring this little girl back.

But what we can do is make sure that little dynamo Melody is never forgotten.
