MDA Space signs contract with US Department of War agency to potentially help with “Golden Dome” project

The contract allows MDA to participate in “a wide range of work to enhance defense against threats from land, sea, air, cyberspace and space.”

MDA Space has signed a contract with the US Missile Defense Agency, which operates through the US War Department, to potentially help with President Donald Trump's project.Golden Domeinitiative.

The Brampton, Ont.-based space technology manufacturer announced Thursday that it has received an indefinite supply/indefinite quantity supply (IDIC) contract from the Missile Defense Agency for the Scalable National Innovation Enterprise Multilayered Defense (SHIELD) program.

“As tasks and services related to our capabilities are published in SHIELD, we will respond with competitive proposals.”

The contract “covers a broad range of work to enhance defense against threats from land, sea, air, cyberspace and space,” the company said in a statement. A spokesperson told BetaKit in an email Thursday that MDA Space can now bid on future missions and services supporting the $151 billion program. This could “create significant revenue opportunities” for MDA Space in the future.

“As tasks and services related to our capabilities are published on SHIELD, we will respond with competitive offers,” the spokesperson said.

MDA Space's share price on the Toronto Stock Exchange jumped five per cent on the news, from C$27.79 per share to $28.54 per share as of noon EST Thursday.

The Missile Defense Agency says it is a research, development and acquisition agency that works on missile defense systems for the United States and its allies.

The SHIELD program is part of the three-year, $175 billion Project Gold Dome, which will detect and shoot down any potential missiles targeting the United States. The multi-purpose missile defense shield is intended to permanently end the “missile threat to American soil.” Trump promisedbut critics panned the project because both unlikely and will probably grow even more Expensive than advertised. The Canadian government was conversation with the USA about participation in the missile defense project, but did not directly say that he would join.

While the IDIQ contract brings agency attention to MDA Space, the process will be competitive. The agency awarded the SHIELD program's initial IDIQ contracts to more than 1,000 companies. last month.

MDA Space was recently selected as one of first purchases from the new Defense Investment Agency of Canada to develop satellite communications capabilities in the Arctic. The company reported revenue growth profit for the 3rd quarter in November, despite lose under a C$1.8 billion contract with US telecommunications company EchoStar awarded earlier this year.
