Summer McIntosh completed the US Open swimming championships by setting a record in the women's 200-meter butterfly on Saturday in Austin, Texas.

The Toronto athlete, now under the tutelage of legendary coach Bob Bowman, touched the wall in two minutes, 2.62 seconds to claim victory in her new home pool at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center at the University of Texas.

“I think this is my fastest time of the season in the 200 butterfly, but I want to keep getting closer to that world record (2:01.81) and there are things I can work on,” the 19-year-old told Swimming Canada. “I’m very happy, it was a good swim and finish to the competition tonight.”

McIntosh, who holds the next four best times after the world record, added that her adaptation to training in Texas with Bowman has gone well and she is happy with the program.

“I’ve really enjoyed it here so far, it’s an amazing training environment and everyone is so welcoming,” she said.

A three-time world champion in the 200m butterfly, McIntosh also posted the fastest time in the American pool in the 400m freestyle on Thursday, clocking 3:55.37.

McIntosh also excelled on Friday, earning a bronze medal in the 100m butterfly (57.01) and seventh in the 100m backstroke (1:01.62).

Canadians were on the podium five times on Friday and Saturday, including three gold medals.

Ilya Kharun won the men's 50m on Saturday in 22.98 after winning silver in the 200m (1:55.71) the previous day. He also won silver in Friday's men's 100m (50.40).

The Montreal native was happy with his racing this week, feeling relaxed and happy with where he is at midway through the season.

“I didn’t have time to train really long [50m pool] but for a mid-season meeting everything went very well,” said the 20-year-old.

Harvey wins silver in women's 50m

Mary-Sophie Harvey of Montreal's CAMO won a silver medal in the 50-meter dash (26.43) on Saturday, a day after winning gold in 4:36.75 in the women's 400-meter individual medley.

Harvey, 26, views every race as an opportunity for growth and maintains a positive attitude.

“I won’t lie, I expected to be a little faster, but I can handle it,” said the two-time Olympian from Trois-Rivières Cayes. “I'm going back to the 400 IM competition, it's a good starting point so I'm not trying to be too hard on myself. Lots of things to improve on and looking forward to it.”

Alexandre Lepage and Blake Tierney won silver medals – Lepage in the 100m breaststroke (1:06.81) and Tierney in the 100m backstroke (53.52).

Tierney is battling injuries but is happy with his performance given his current training volume.

“I think I did a good job… [and] the timing is very good considering the circumstances, so I can’t complain,” the Saskatoon native said.

Tierney, 23, also swam Saturday night in the 200 back (1:58.21) and added silver.
