Brief description of the game:
NC State came out of the gate aggressive, led 8-3 at the first timeout and forced 3 TOs, but already had 4 fouls (2 by Holloman, 1 by Copeland and Williams). Unfortunately, Texas didn't seem to care at all. Texas isn't known as a 3PT shooting team, but when the Pack kept throwing open looks at them, they scored 8. 8 of their 15 goals scored were 3PT shots. At the half, Texas shot 60%/62%/90%. At 1:59, Williams fell hard and was taken to the locker room for treatment. Williams, Holloman, Copeland and Breed each committed two fouls at the break. Wen Lubin led the Buckeyes with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist. Halftime score: Texas up ten, 47-37.

Darrion Williams entered the starting lineup for the second half. NC State slowly clawed its way back and finally tied the game at 12:14, then again at 10:13 and finally took a 1-point lead at 71-70 at the 7:14 mark. But Texas did what they had been doing all night: They hit mostly wide-open 3PT shots, and NC State couldn't handle their offense. The final score was 97-102.
General conclusions:
-
NC State's defensive strategy of allowing 3PT shots was risky, and in this case it burned the Wolfpack. It's not sustainable when you play better teams.
-
Definition of terrible defense: score 97 points and lose.
-
Definition of terrible defense: Opponent throws 56%/50%/85%.
-
The definition of a terrible defense: 55% of the opponent's shots (16 of 29) were 3rd down shots.
-
Texas is known for its inside scoring, NC State scores in the paint 46-20
-
Texas, known for its dominant rebounding, only won 31–28. NC State led the team in offensive rebounds 8-6. (not many missed shots)
-
Still too many fouls away from the basket. Two starters fouled out, plus Alin Breed fouled off the bench.
