TORONTO — Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube isn't expecting reinforcements for the weekend.
Toronto's head coach told reporters after the team's Friday practice that captain Auston Matthews and fellow top forward Matthew Nice are “questionable” for Saturday's Original Six game in Montreal against the Canadiens.
Matthews took part in a morning run Thursday and was on the ice Friday for the fourth day in a row since injuring his lower body Nov. 11 against the Boston Bruins. Knies, meanwhile, made his first appearance with the team since Tuesday's 3-2 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues with a lower-body injury.
The Leafs got veteran center Scott Laughton (upper body) back from Thursday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, but along with Matthews and Nice, the club is still missing defensemen Chris Tanev (upper body) and Brandon Carlo (lower body), forward Nicholas Roy (upper body) and goaltender Anthony Stolarz (upper body). body).
Berube said Stolarz hasn't been on the ice since he was also injured on Nov. 11 and hopes Carlo can start skating on Monday. The coach added that there are no deadlines for either Tanev or Roy.
Toronto is 9-9-3 on the season heading into a six-game road trip.
