Some people eat a bagel like a sandwich.
Others like to enjoy it with an open face.
Martha Stewart does neither one nor the other.
“Taught many years ago by my daughter Alexis Stewart,” she explained her unconventional method of consuming New York staples in Instagram post from December 12th..
- She buys her poppy seed bagels from PopUp Bagels, a Connecticut-based bagel chain known for its tear-and-dip experience.
- She cuts it in half.
- She takes half of the half (that is, a quarter) and breaks it into “sweet pieces.”
- She tops these “sweet bites” with a “slightly” flavored or unflavored cream cheese.
She says the experience makes her “always satisfied” and “never too full.”
This is what these “sweet pieces” look like:
So obviously we have a lot of questions.
First of all, and most importantly: what is going on here?
Secondly, why does she only eat a quarter of the bagel? Where does the rest go?
Third, why doesn't she tear and dip them while eating?
Fourth, where does lemon come into play?
Fifth, is this a spontaneous smear campaign?
And finally, how does PopUp Bagels feel about how their bagels were treated?
“PopUp Bagels is known for eating bagels a little differently – Grip, Rip and Dip style. That being said, we encourage everyone to enjoy bagels the way they want, which is why we sell them hot and whole,” founder Adam Goldberg told TODAY.com. “Martha just took this idea to a whole new level and we love seeing how creative people are in bringing it to life.”
It's no surprise that her comments section is filled with concerned citizens.
“Love you Martha, but it's 2025 and now we can eat whole bagels ❤️,” wrote cookbook author Christina Musgrave, echoing the words of other commenters.dietary culture» mood.
“I don’t know, diva,” another fan commented.
“This is crazy Martha,” someone else wrote.
“Straight to jail,” said another.
“Queen Martha, this is a violation of the bagel code of ethics 🚫,” one person warned.
“As a New Yorker, I am against this nonsense,” wrote another.
But by tearing her donut to shreds, she may have actually found a way to unite the Internet. Thank you, Martha, for your sacrifice.
