Mark Henry Explains Why WWE Changed ECW Title Belt

In the mid-2000s, WWE had the brilliant idea of reviving the ECW brand, but without everything that made ECW what it was in the late 90s. As expected, the project largely failed. However, there were a few big moments, such as CM Punk's debut on the main roster, which happened on the rebooted program. A guilty pleasure for some fans was the “monster” era of ECW, when mammoths like Big Show, Kane and “The Strongest Man in the World” Mark Henry were heavily featured on weekly programming.

During Henry's time with the brand, he won the ECW Championship. At the time, WWE used the same title design as the iconic belt introduced in ECW in the '90s. However, during Henry's reign the appearance of the title changed. The new belt was all silver with the letters ECW written in a giant font.

Henry was a guest at Isaiah Channel 1 on YouTube and talked about the history of belt design changes.

“They wanted to find a title that would suit me because if you look at these pictures, the ECW title was very small and looked like one of the old school belts. And they wanted me to have a belt that would fit a giant, so they designed one. I mean, this belt was huge and probably weighed 10 to 12 pounds. It was very, very heavy and I had to go buy a new carry-on bag because it wouldn't fit in my old luggage. Yeah, I had a feeling that was the reason they changed the ECW name.”

Henry discussed a variety of topics on the podcast, including his iconic “retirement” speechwhere does he say Cena didn't know about the turn until right before he entered the ring.
