With just six legislative days left before she plans to resign, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is reportedly working on a last-ditch effort to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson from office.
The recent MAGA defector quietly took her temperature while calling for the chair to be vacated, three sources familiar with her efforts said. MS NOWformerly MSNBC.
To remove Johnson, Greene will need the support of eight other Republicans. “Marjorie is asking members to recruit nine people to oust the Speaker,” one source told MS NOW. “And if we don’t get to work codifying Trump’s agenda, anything can happen.”
But Green, who has spent the last few weeks publicly criticizing Johnson denied this information. The Georgia Republican told MS Now that this is “not true” and that she has “no interest in participating” in their story.
While the attempt to oust Johnson is likely to fail, the reports come as growing complaints about his leadership.
Last week, Representative Elise Stefanik, who is running for governor of New York, said Wall Street Journal that Johnson would have had no votes if there had been a roll call vote. “I believe most Republicans would vote for new leadership,” Stefanik said. “It's so widespread.” Representative Nancy Mace also shared Greene's frustrations, and Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna recently bypassed the Speaker to force a vote on a bill that would ban members of Congress from trading stocks.
Tuesday Green said CNN reported that Republican women have begun lashing out at Johnson because “he's putting us on the sidelines and not taking us seriously.”
Greene has said she will resign on Jan. 5, giving her limited time to find support for her measure. She previously tried to remove Johnson last May, but that effort failed after most Democrats intervened to save the speaker.
