It's been more than four years since Marc Bergevin lost his job as general manager of the Canadiens. A disastrous start to the season, following the club's run to the finals a few months earlier, sealed the fate of a general manager who already seemed to have one foot out the door.
He entered the final year of his contract without an extension in his pocket: usually a sign that a manager's days are numbered.
Since then, Bergevin has worked with the Kings as an advisor. Recently, however, things have been looking up for him: he became a finalist in the race for the post of general manager of the Islanders, was named general manager of Team Canada at the Spengler Cup and he accepted a position as Jarmo Kekalainen's assistant with the Sabres..

You'd think Bergevin, who was ignored by the Kings when they were forced to search for a general manager in recent months, might have decided to go the Buffalo route for that reason. As an assistant, his name will circulate more around the league… especially if the Sabers finally manage to turn the corner.
And if they do, remember that the Sabers just fired their general manager and replaced him with an assistant. You know, maybe they'll do it again in a few years.
Let's remember that a few years ago Bergevin was considered as a replacement for Kyle Dubas in Toronto. AND The Maple Leafs are chomping at the bit these days.perhaps the club will be tempted to clean up its act… and perhaps Brad Treliving will be there then.
Perhaps that's when the door will open for Bergevin.
