Marathon art director Joseph Cross has left Bungie after ten years with the developer.
In a statement for My cityCross explained that it was his decision to leave, but did not explain why.
“I’m very proud of this project and what the team has achieved over the last six years,” he said.
Cross also shared the post on social mediaand said he would “love playing this game as a fan with all of you.”
“I am incredibly proud of the visual world we created for Marathon,” he wrote.
“Getting support of this magnitude for something extraordinary is rare, and Bungie's art team is the best in the business. I will enjoy the game as a fan along with all of you. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout this.”
Cross worked at Bungie for 13 years, starting in 2011 as lead concept artist. In 2018, he became the studio's senior art director, working on the Destiny franchise.
At Marathon, Cross oversaw art direction and visual development for seven years. He led an art team of over 80 employees, including co-developers and outsourcing.
Cross was also a concept artist for Electronic Arts and Motion Theory, as well as art director for Probably Monsters.
After an indefinite delay, Bungie announced The Marathon launch window is March 2026..
The game was Originally scheduled for release on September 23, 2025.. Bungie later admitted that it “needed[ed] more time to turn Marathon into a game that truly reflects [its players] passion.”
During its financial results in August, Sony said: Marathon was expected to launch “within the financial year.”“
The firm reiterated that confidence in its second-quarter earnings last month, saying it “entirely dedicated to running the game on schedule“
