As part of the new collective bargaining agreement, the NHL and NHLPA agreed to formalize the fact that players do not have to dress up in costumes before games, a long-standing tradition that many fans appreciate as society increasingly dresses up.
According to the NHL, “clubs are not permitted to propose any rules regarding player dress code,” adding that “players are required to dress in accordance with current fashion standards.”
This is an update to the expiring CBA, which required players to wear “jackets, ties and dress pants at all Club games and while traveling to and from such games, unless otherwise directed by the head coach or general manager.”
Looser dress code rules have been fast-tracked to come into force before this season, ahead of the new CBA coming into force in the 2026-27 season.
“Guys can wear whatever they want,” Maple Leafs forward William Nylander told The Canadian Press. “Whatever they feel comfortable wearing in games.”
