MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United missed the chance to move up to fifth in the Premier League on Thursday when West Ham salvaged a late 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
Sungutu Magassa's 83rd-minute equalizer canceled out Diogo Dalot's opening goal, which had kept United level on points with fourth-place Chelsea.
Bruno Fernandes missed two chances to score the winning goal in stoppage time, firing just wide from outside the box and then firing wide again.
It was another setback for United, who have won just one of their last five games – drawing three.
Despite this run, Ruben Amorim's side had the opportunity to move closer to the Champions League places with the victory. And it looked likely when, in the 58th, Casemiro's long-range shot into the penalty area was controlled by Dalot.
The United defender then turned and fired a shot past West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.
There were few chances in this game and West Ham rarely threatened to equalize. But Jarrod Bowen's late corner header was cleared off the line by Noussair Mazraoui.
Magassa was the quickest to react in the box and fired a shot low into the corner, prompting celebrations from the visiting fans.
The result leaves United eighth and West Ham 18th.
