Leila Fujimori / Lfujimori @Staradvertiser.com Mika Auna, 29, is on trial today on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of his mother in Kai, Hawaii.
A 29-year-old man accused of killing his 60-year-old mother in Hawaii Kai made his first appearance in Honolulu District Court this morning.
Mika Nainoa Nohea Alapai Auna addressed the judge, saying: “It was self-defense.”
And then he said: “I’m not a monster.”
A judge confirmed bail at $500,000 and set a preliminary hearing for Friday.
Auna was arrested on Saturday at his mother Michelle Hanapi-Auna's Upolo Place home.
Her body was found on the floor shortly before noon Saturday in response to a police call for a welfare check.
The medical examiner said she died from blunt force trauma to the head and ruled it a homicide.
Police also arrested a 27-year-old woman, also at the home, on suspicion of murder and criminal contempt of court, but she was released pending further investigation.
