It's not always easy being the son of a head football coach. You will be able to experience the ups and downs of the season with your teammates, knowing that your father is responsible for the good and the bad.
Kane Kazani, the son of Loyola head coach Drew Kazani, did much to make his father proud and change the Cubs' fortunes Thursday night at Sophie Stadium. He blocked a field goal attempt that resulted in a touchdown, picked up yards for a huge first down and made multiple tackles in a 13-10 win over Gardena Serra.
Afterwards, when Drew addressed the team in the middle of Sophie Stadium, Kane looked at him as just another player. But when you are so close to the head coach, you feel his emotions. And Drew has had many attempts to help a team that needs to rely on new players.
So far, so good. The Cubs are 4-3 and 1-1 in the Mission League, which appears to be in a wide-open battle for second and third behind undefeated Sierra Canyon. There are four teams with 1-1 records in the league, and Serra (0-2) will still be around for the rest of the season.
Next up for Loyola is a key game against Bishop Amat on Friday.
Kane leads the team in tackles with 75. His 11-year-old brother, watching the game from the Sofi Stadium, was certainly inspired to one day take his place on the football field.
